Nearly three decades after the tragic killing of hip-hop icon Tupac Shakur, a Las Vegas jury delivered a landmark verdict, finding former gang leader Duane “Keefe D” Davis guilty of first-degree murder. The unanimous verdict brings a historic measure of legal accountability to a 1996 drive-by shooting that remained one of music history’s most debated cold cases.
Shakur was shot on September 7, 1996, while riding in a BMW driven by Death Row Records co-founder Marion “Suge” Knight near the Las Vegas Strip, succumbing to his injuries six days later at age 25. Arrested in September 2023, the 63-year-old Davis became the only person ever criminally charged in connection with the rap legend’s assassination.
The Prosecution’s Case and Nevada Law
While prosecutors did not allege that Davis pulled the trigger, they argued under Nevada law that he served as the “shot caller” who orchestrated the retaliatory attack. According to state law, individuals who orchestrate, assist, or supply weapons for a murder are held criminally responsible alongside the shooter.
The state presented evidence showing that the shooting was planned in response to a brawl involving Shakur and Davis’ nephew, Orlando Anderson, at the MGM Grand earlier that night. Crucial to the prosecution’s victory were Davis’ own self-incriminating accounts over the years—including media interviews and his 2019 memoir, Compton Street Legend—where he consistently placed himself inside the white Cadillac from which the lethal shots were fired.
